BBFC

The BBFC was made to classify films into specific age ratings so that it can be aimed at certain age groups in cinemas based on how violent and what references it has in the film. They get their funding from the distributors that pay them to review the film.

Normally DVD's are submitted and are viewed by one single person in a room set up to be like a home to understand the home viewing feel. If it is a foreign language film a translator will be called in to help but films are usually viewed alone. If issues are raised then it is debated at weekly meetings. Issues could include-
general context - plot, characters, outline of individual scenes.  Timings of key moments, including camera angles, type of shots, on- and off-screen moment.    Bad language, sex and drug references and so on.
Issues raised over classifying a film are:
Violence,Sex,Sexual Violence,Drugs,Horror, Imitable Behaviour,Discrimination and Language.

The Dark Knight had a controversial age rating because of it having vast amounts of violence which smaller children may not be accustomed to. Also some of the scenes were brought up by members of the public for being to violent, like the pencil scene which some people thought was quite bad. The Jokers character also came under scrutiny as his affliction with knifes was quite worrying for people in the UK has it has a problem with knife crime.
The guideline for a 15 certificate are that there is strong language allowed and sexual references in context to the narrative, however repeated and frequent use of unnecessary language isn't allowed, violence is allowed.

Film pitch and audience focus group

MEST2 FILM PITCH

Title and tagline:

TRANSGRESSION: Their fate belongs to the hour

Topic from brief (e.g. Modern-noir, Urban Life etc.):

Modern-Noir

Genre (and sub-genre if applicable):

Thriller, psychological thriller

Logline – one sentence that sums up the film and hooks people in (25 words or fewer):

A psychological thriller that explores the division between reality and the false distortions through the eyes of dysfunctional teenagers

Other successful films that are similar to yours:

Gone Girl, in terms of the mentally disturbed protagonist.

Narrative structure for full 30-minute film – what happens and in what order (max 100 words):

The film will start with a bored group of teenagers going to their hangout place, where they invent a new version of spin the bottle, the objective of the game is to change your life within an hour if you have been chosen. They begin to play the game and the protagonist, who is mentally unstable gets chosen. With the hour he has been given he decides to invite a vulnerable and naive friend to join him, which she immediately does. The naive friend is unaware about what he is planning to do but continues to eagerly join him on their walk to the woods. This is where he brutally murders hers and disposes her body of. When the protagonist arrives back after an hour his friends ask where the naive and vulnerable friend is, he dismisses the questions and says she went home. Over the next 2 days people begin to grow suspicious, with Friend 2 starting to accuse him over her sudden disappearance. Despite this the group of friends decide to continue playing the game and when Friend 1 gets chosen, she is put under pressure by Friend 2 and decides to kill him before killing herself by self drowning in a river.  The scene ends with a suicide note stating “Gone for an hour”.

Main protagonist, their desires, the conflicts they encounter etc.:

The main protagonist, who is the killer, has a manipulative characteristic which he hides through his charisma and charm, it could almost be argued that he’s mentally unstable. He desires power and attention, something which he lacked before he brutally murdered a vulnerable friend. His killing gave him a sense of superiority, but it also adds onto his paranoia. He faces several conflicts such as one member of their friendship group getting suspicious about his sudden change in personality, as his lies increase and increase.

Other characters and their role/audience appeal:

1) Vulnerable friend (female): She’s quite naive and easy to manipulate. The quieter character of the group, her characteristics and tragic death will create some pity for her from the audience

2) Friend 1 (Male):  Humorous character, he is quite lively and is the driving force of all their friendships

3) Friend 2 (Female): She is quite reserved and laid back but pays attention to surroundings in quite a lot of detail. She is the character who gets suspicious, and her intelligence appeals to the audience.

4) Friend 3 (Female): Close friend of the vulnerable friend, she is who kills the protagonist. It is quite surprising for the audience as her friendly characteristics contrast the crime she commits and her sudden decision of committing suicide.

Target audience for your film (age, gender, social class, interests etc.):

The main target audience would be for young adults 15-24, hence the 15 certification of the film
I believe male and females would watch it, it has an appeal to all genders i.e. the friendship, the conflicts and the violence.
Working class/middle class
Those who are interested in thrillers with a psychological element to it, or who want an insight into the lives of teenagers with an interesting twist.

The three-minute extract you will make and where it would appear in the film:

The three-minute extract would appear about 5 minutes into the film. It will consist of the group of teenagers spinning the bottle and starting to play the game and the protagonist, who is mentally unstable (his friends aren’t aware of this) being chosen. He is given “one hour to change his life”, and this scene will consist of a shots of him trying to kill the vulnerable friend after leading her on. The scene will end with the protagonist walking away, which will create a cliff hanger and enigma codes on what happens next.

MEST2: Arthouse film institution research

Production: Independent film studios

1) Look back at the five films you have analysed for your existing product research. Find which studios made them – e.g. Film Four, Studio Canal, BFI, BBC Films etc.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-This is that productions
Girlhood-Arte France Cinéma ,Canal+ ,CNC,Ciné+,Hold Up Films,Lilies Films.
Donnie Darko-Flower Films
The Falling-Continental Motion Pictures Corporation
Boyhood-IFC Films(US),Universal Pictures(International)

2) What other films do these studios produce? Can you find any any other independent, art house or low-budget examples?

This is that productions:(21 grams,The door in the floor,Thumbsucker)

Arte France Cinéma ,Canal+ ,CNC,Ciné+,Hold Up Films,Lilies Films: (Baby balloon, Tomboy)

Flower Films: (Happy Camp ,Animal, happy camp)

Continental Motion Pictures Corporation: (Gran varietà,Brutality)

3) Do the studios have any notable successes? What is the most successful low-budget or independent film the studio has released?

This is that productions : #1 film at the US box office (The American) and the first film to sell that year at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Distribution: Independent film distributors
  • Firstly a group of directors share their ideas and plan a rough idea of how their movie is going got be.
  • Secondly a target audience must be created in order for the movie to fit into the target audience.
  • Thirdly a lot of pre-production work has to be done for example creating scripts, storyboards etc.
  • Next you must think of who will make sure the movie planning and everything is going in place when the distributors are not working on it.
  • Planning for the release must be done for example what countries it will be released in.
  • After that a release date needs to be created. This is where you must think carefully about your target audience too. For example if it is a 12A film it means you will have a younger target audience. This means the film should be released at a time where the younger audience will be able to go and watch it e.g. weekends, half terms , summer holidays.
  • Advertisement for the film must be done. An example of this would be trailers on YouTube , TV adverts, billboard posters.
  • Lastly the you need to have your film properly licensed so that people cannot not make illegal copies e.g. get a copyright.

6) Research Curzon Artificial Eye. Who are they and what do they do?

Curzon Artificial Eye is a British film distributor, specialising in independent, foreign-language and art house films for cinema and home entertainment.

6) Look at the Curzon Artficial Eye YouTube channel. Watch three trailers for recent or upcoming independent films and identify something you can learn from each film to use in your own film production.

Kiss of the spider women
We can have an odd narrative and storyline and give it a strong historic and film noir feel, especially through the music used and the typography in the text on screen.

The choir
This film highlights we can use an emotive version of lessons that we are told in everyday life and can also give the movie a very good 'home' and 20's feel in order to add to the emotional connection depending on out target audience.

Ice and the sky
This film highlights the documentary aspect we can involve by using voice overs and more realistic clips as a sense of nostalgia and making it seem more personal and historic.

Exhibition: Art-house cinemas

Find some London-based arthouse cinemas and research the following:

1) What is the name of the cinema? Where is it?

EVERYMAN BAKER STREET (96-98 Baker street, London ,W1U)
ELECTRIC CINEMA (191 Portobello Road, Notting Hill, London W11)

2) What type of films do they show? What films are on this week? How do their programmes differ from the major cinema chains like Vue?

EVERYMAN BAKER STREET : Bridge of spies,Carol,The hunger games: Mockingjay part 2.

ELECTRIC CINEMA : Carol,Bridge of spies,Black mass.

3) What type of audience attends this kind of arthouse cinemas? Are there any clues on the website regarding the target audience? How can you tell?

For both of these cinema I would say that the audience that the audience that attends are around 18+. I can tell this as on the website for the 'every man baker street' cinema it says that there is a bar which mean indicate that this cinema is aimed at adults. In terms of the electric cinema i can see offers on seating (sofas) which include champagne , which may indicate that this cinema may also be for an older audience. I would 18+ as alcoholic beverages can only be served to those 18 or over.

A case study in independent film production: Film London and Microwave Film

1) What is Film London and why does it exist? Film London is London's film and media agency - sustaining, promoting and developing London as a major international film-making and film cultural capital.

2) What is the purpose of Microwave Film? Microwave is a unique funding scheme for UK feature films by Film London. The Microwave scheme funds films and give development and mentoring support to short-listed projects as well as production finance, distribution support to the final films.

3) What is the London Calling project for Film London and how does it encourage independent film-making? Microwave does more than fund films; they give development and mentoring support to all of the short-listed projects, as well as production finance and distribution support to the final commissioned films.

4) Choose three feature films funded by Microwave Film and embed their trailers in your blog. For each film, explain why it fits the profile for an arthouse or independent film and what target audience the film might attract.

This is an art house film as it investigates and depicts the contention and impediments of a social and provincial issues. It concentrates extraordinarily on urban situations and how the conventional society of the range can influence the identities and impacts of distinctive sorts of individuals. It depicts the huge subjects of sex, medications, viciousness and posses. I think this is an extremely sensational film with activity topics focused at a youthful grown-up gathering of people with it's convincing story that rotates around urban society.

This is an art house film on the grounds that it has an account in which two improbable characters bond because of a far-fetched occasion. It's an extremely interesting account that has characters which despite the fact that are particular and uncommon, the gathering of people can without much of a stretch relate with. The clever tone of the account and it's social urban subject would be focused at a youthful grown-up gathering of people.

This is an art house film because of the fact that it concentrates on an ethnic minority and investigates the difficulties and points of view of a conventional social issue that is for the most part not regularly talked about. It concentrates a great deal more on crude feeling as opposed to the real show or the contention.

3 tips

Don't over do your narrative keep it simple so the audience do not get confused with with is happening .

You need to be able to consistently explain your story which greatly helps in terms of pitching an idea and drawing your target audience in.

Do not over do your concept in order to help it fit in with your genre. E.g art house films. Doing this may make your narrative confusing or not make sense. Adding just a few elements from your genre is okay as long as it is enough to make your audience understand the concept.

MEST2: Existing product research

In this short film extract we can see that camera work is quite natural, there is a few shaky camera movements which tells us that a hand held camera is being used instead of using a tripod. By filming with a free hand camera it makes the scene / image look more natural. There is a number of different camera shots and movements in this extract. For example when there is a straight cut from a medium shot of the two characters walking towards the camera to a long shot of them. The use of the straight cuts begin to speed up the pace of film. The editing of this scene is quite straightforward and I think the director did this to help us keep up with what's actually happening between both characters and not to be distracted with the editing. In terms on mise-en-scene we can see that the male character is not dressed very well, his hair is not combed and his clothing looks quite scruffy. This is probably a way of how the director is trying to portray how he is lost without the female character, he life seems like a mess without her in it.

This is a short extract of the film 'Girlhood'. This film is about the lives of a group of teenage girl who live in the tough, ghetto parts of Paris. In this extract the teens are dancing and singing on the train which reinforces the typical stereotypes of  teens being loud and disruptive. The use of  close ups and extreme close ups used on these characters allow us to see the expressions on the characters faces ,this is effective because the close ups reveals to the audience who the main actors of this movie is. From this short extract we could see the dominant representation of black people, causing problems, shouting loud in a public service transport. In terms of mise-en-scene we could see that the characters are quite loud , disruptive and showing anti-social behaviour on public transport ,which may tell the audience that they may not care about other people or their thoughts on them. The use of the panning/tracking shot is evident in this scene when the camera focuses on Marieme and then there's a slow pan shot and the camera moves slowly to her friend. This allows us to see the instant reactions of the other female characters when Marieme is dancing/performing for them.

This short extract begins with  an establishing shot ,then the camera movement is panning down to a birds-eye-view shot of the car. In the beginning of this scene there is non-diegetic music. As he's in the car there's a POV shot of him looking out into the road. There are also a number of straight cuts from a shot of him in the car, to a shot of the car driving, which may of been taken using a crane. The pace of the cuts aren't very quick, which sets a slow pace for the rest of the scene, Also, the non-diegetic music is quite slow and peaceful.  Furthermore, as he's driving there's a crane following the car and there's continuous long shots of the car. In addition, there is another POV shot as he takes pictures.  There's another establishing shot as he arrives at the school which turns into panning shot as he pulls up. The male actor looks quite scruffy as his clothes looks quite dirty also his hair looks quite messy too, which may suggest he's been on the road for quite sometime. I think this film would be targeted at teenagers, mainly 15 and above.

The genre of this film is drama and sci-fi. There are a number of  camera shots in the film which always have the main protagonist in there. The different transitions that are used are cuts and this also has a lack of editing in certain parts of the film to focus on the main protagonist (Donnie Darko). In terms of mise-en-scenem we could see that the scene was in a school and included a conversation between a teacher and student. As this is occurring the camera shots cut between Donnie, his pupils and the teacher in the classroom. This is done so the audience can focus on him while he is speaking and also for the audience to identify him as the main character so we can grow attached to him throughout the film. The scene then cuts from the schools classroom to the head teacher’s office where the main protagonist is in trouble for having a heated argument with the teacher.  There is a use of the 180 degree rule between the parents and the head teacher as they are talking. Even when the teacher is talking to the parents Donnie is still in the background to highlight his presence which makes the audience aware of him being the main character.

This film is about a young woman who is followed by an unknown supernatural force after getting involved in a sexual encounter. In this short extract it starts off with diegetic sounds e.g sounds of the birds and the cars. After a while some non-diegetic music begins to fade in changing the atmosphere of the scene which may begin to make the audience feel at unease. There are a number of different shots in this extract. To begin with there is an establishing shot of the neighborhood and then the camera follows a young lady as she runs away from her home. In addition there is a panning shot of the female character as she runs which forces/makes the audience feel as though they are running with her. The use of the close ups on her face allow the audience to see how traumatized and frightened she is which then creates enigma codes. For example the audience may begin to ask questions like 'why is she running?' and 'what is she frightened of ?' which then creates tension and draws them in to watch more.

Coursework brainstorm

I will be working with Ladan for my film production.

Genre: Thriller/Mystery

Topics most likely to be: Urban Life,

Plot

The film could be based around a group of  bored teenagers who invent an extreme version of 21 dare's, where whoever is dared has an hour to change the course of their life by doing something they normally wouldn't dare to do .i.e. standing up for themselves, robbing a store. However, the game is taken too far when one of the player's, who is psychologically unstable, kills a person which leads to a chain of events.

(Will be updated and slightly changed to make it more suitable for the actual coursework)

We would like there to be a lot of interesting cinematography, editing etc. in the production to fit the conventions of an art-house film, as from research I have found that an art film is "intended to be a serious artistic work, often experimental and not designed for mass appeal".

Preliminary exercise evaluation

Our preliminary exercise task was to produce  a short clip that involved filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. In this task we also had to make sure that we demonstrated match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.
In my preliminary exercise I worked in a group with Sunny, Ladan and Mandev. Overall I think we worked well with planning and completing tasks. Sunny and I shared the storyboard between us, I did the first ten shots and he did the last ten. Mandev wrote the script and Ladan completed the shot list. When we did our planning I think our communication skills were quite good we would let each other know when we completed each task in order for the next person to complete their own one. However when it came to actually filming and editing not all of us had put in effort and some were doing the majority of the work. So to improve for next time when we do our real production I believe we should plan filming and editing tasks for each other so the work is split up equally.
The strengths of our production were that we had a good selection of shots and our editing was quite good. We used a number of close-ups and extreme close-ups in order for the audience to get a good glimpse of the character’s facial expressions and emotions. I also think our script was really good too as the dialogue fitted in really well with the concept of our short film. I think our production would fit into the genres: drama, action and comedy. Although it was an intense, gruesome scene there were some parts that were quite humorous for example when the security guard waited outside and listened to his headphones. The use of the non diegetic sound of the music playing in his headphones was contrapuntal to the clip which made it quite humorous for the audience.
I believe the weaknesses of our production again were that we could have split the filming and editing tasks more equally in our group. Also we did not do the 180 degree shot correctly. We noticed that our main character looked like he was speaking to himself, so we know how to edit and film this shot correctly for next time. Also I noticed that the lighting continuously changed in one scene. In one shot the lighting would be facing away from the main protagonist’s face and then in the next shot it would. So next time we would make sure that the lighting is the same continuously in these shots. Another weakness I noticed was that the sound echoed quite a lot in that particular room that we shot in. so next time we need to consider where we are shooting properly and do tests on filming sound to enable that it is correct.
In terms of mise-en-scene i think we could do better with props. The use of blood and scissors was a good addition to our production as it helped the audience understand the concept which was heavily based on the concept of the film ‘reservoir dogs’. However I do think we could have done better with costumes for example the main protagonist could have worn a suite and maybe have a cigar in his hand to make him look more serious and superior. I also think the character being held for ransom should have had proper ropes around his hands and legs in order for the audience to take the production more seriously. Lastly I believe we could consider a change of location for our next production for it to fit with the concept better.

LR - Film language test

WWW- Detailed answers with a lot of media termonalogy used.
EBI- Re - do question 4.

In the beginning of the clip there is only continuity editing used throughout, this made the pace of the scene really slow which created a little tension as the audience felt as though something would suddenly happen. While this continuity editing was used we were shown shots of oil dropping and shots of the man who is tied up which may signify how his life is slowly ending. In addition a lot of straight cuts were used throughout the scene from long shots of the protagonist walking to extreme close ups of the dying man's face. This Creates tension as well as straight cuts speed up the pace and the used it extreme close ups and long shots showed us how the dying man became nervous and frightened when the main protagonist walked towards him. This also gets the audience more engaged with the film as they start to wonder what will happen next. Enigma codes are created as they begin to ask questions like 'why is he so afraid of him ?' And 'what will he do to the dying man'.

Editing task

this short extract of 'catch me if you can' Steven Spielberg uses a number of editing techniques to create tension for the audience. To begin with the scene starts off with non-diegetic sound which is a mysterious kind of music  , creating tension for the audience as it tells us something dramatic may occur very soon. While this non-diegetic sound is played we can see a medium shot of the two male characters as they argue with each-other and a tracking shot then occurs as they both walk across the room. The use of the panning shot makes the audience feel more engaged with the movie as they feel as though they are the characters themselves, as the characters move across the room the audience feel as though they are too. In this situation it would cause the audience to feel tension as they feel as though they are the characters themselves so they begin to feel nervous as they think the gun is actually being pointed at them. Steven Spielbreg also uses a number of close-ups in this extract which again engages the audience with the movie as it allows them to see things in greater detail. For example when the detective goes into the other detective's wallet there is a close up of the wallet allowing the audience to see what is inside it . This showed us that the wallet was filled with fake cards and no type of id ,which gave us a hint that the other detective was not real. The use of this extreme close-up also creates enigma codes as the audience begins to ask questions like 'whose wallet is that?' and 'is he a real detective?'. By creating enigmas code it engages the audience even more making them want to keep watching on in order to find out what will happen next.Steven also used point of view  shots when the detectives were looking out of the window allowing the audience to see through the characters view, which again makes the audience feel as though they are the characters themselves. The use of straight cuts in this extract also speed up the pace of the film as first we can see an over-the-shoulder shot of the detective holding a gun at Leonardo Dicaprio then suddenly we can see a close-up   of the letter in his hands. This may be trying to tell the audience that the letter in his hand is going to be significant in the events leading to the aftermath.

Media awards : Favourite productions

The experiment

The experiment was one of my favourite year 12 productions because of the use of different camera shots , diegetic and non-diegetic sounds which created a lot of tension for the audience. The 2 minute clip begins with a non-diegetic sound which is a voice over , this instantly signifies to the audience that a story was going to be told. As the voice over is played a number of shots are also played at the same time , allowing the audience to understand the concept of the story clearly. One of my favourite shots in this short production was the panning shot of the main character 'Alissa Garcia' when she was running away. The panning shot allows the audience to feel as if they are the main character themselves as instead of seeing her run off out of the shot and out of our sight we continuously see her running which makes us feel like we are going wherever she is going. This creates tension as we are now more engaged with the film and we know that she is in danger so we feel as though we are in danger too. In terms of cinematography in the beginning of the short clip we are shown text on the screen which again engages the audience as we are basically forced to read it as if we don't ,we may feel as though we missed some important key aspects of the film. I also noticed the contrast between the dim and bright lighting in different scenes. At first when we are introduced to the main character and her story a lot of things are in black and white and dim lighting however, when we see her in the big green field this shot is in colour. I feel as though this was done to show the contrast between her dark past and her 'new beginnings' , perhaps her running away from her problems will be her new life. In terms of editing I noticed a lot of straight cuts were used in order to speed up the pace of the film , this is a great technique if you want to create tension and make the audience more engaged as they are eager to find out what will happen in the end.

Labrat

Labrat is my second favourite year 12 production. To begin with in terms of mise-en-scene we can see a lot of props being used which helps the audience to understand the film narrative more clearly. The use of the lab coat, glass beakers and other scientific equipment tells the audience that the main character may actually be a smart boy with hidden talents. This creates enigma codes as they may ask questions like 'what will he do with the equipment?' and 'does he have hidden talents?'. The use of the non-diegetic sound , which was the main character's voice over, allows the audience to understand the film's narrative clearly as he begins to tell us his story. I can also see a number of different camera shots such as close ups, long shots and medium shots. The use of close-ups of the main character's hands shaking and his black eye shows us great detail of his emotions. We could easily tell that he was nervous when his hands were shaking and the extreme close-up of his black eye signifies that some violence may have occurred which may tell the audience that the genre for the film is action or drama.  I personally really liked the main characters acting , his body language and facial expressions contrasted very well with the film narrative. In the beginning of the short film he looked very distressed and upset whereas towards the end where he was in his own quite space he looked very happy. He seemed very hesitant and shaky in the beginning , especially when he was being physically abused. However when he entered the lab his shoulders were up-straight and he seemed very confident in what he was doing. In terms of editing I noticed that a lot of straight cuts were used to create a quick pace for the story and to quickly jump into different scenes. There were also some fade in shots used to go into different scenes in order to portray a flashback to the audience.

What Makes A Good Practical Production

In order to have a good/successful production I think a lot of planning has to take place and everyone must make a good contribution to the work. If you are working in a group I believe everyone should contribute to ideas for planning and have equally set tasks. Having a group leader would be a good idea too as they can check on the rest of the group's progress and make sure that everything is running smoothly. Judging from the two productions that I've picked I've noticed that 'the experiment' was better in terms of causing tension drawing the audience in. A simple and clear narrative was portrayed with-out overdoing the amount of clips and different shots they used. I think keeping it minimal is important because if you add too much to the story you may begin to confuse your audience or even give away the whole story. The less you give them , the more they want. Another aspect of a good practical production is the props you use and the way the characters act. Using props in your film is a must as your scenes will basically be boring without them. Things like weapons, bags , bottles etc. make a difference in your film especially if close-ups are used on them as they could be significant later down in the  In terms of characters acting I think a lot of emotion has to be put into it to make it more realistic , the characters must act as though they are really in that position in order to sell the film narrative to the audience.Lastly always remember to save your work every few minutes , as loosing a lot of hard work would take a lot of time and energy to do all over again.

Cinematography

World trade centre

This is one of the scenes from the movie 'World trade centre. In the beginning we can see the fire fighters making their way through the world trade centre with a lot of equipment. There is a number of close –ups used on the equipment which may be telling us viewers that this is a signification prop as it may have something to do with the nearby events that may occur. A number of panning shots are used in this scene as the fire fighters make their way around the world trade centre which begins to speed up the pace of the scene. The use of this shot creates tension as it tells the viewers that something tragic may occur very soon. At 1:00 is where all the tragic events occur, again a number of close ups are used at this point. The use of close ups shows us the fright in the fire fighters faces when they realise the world trade centre collapses. By letting us viewers see the fire fighters emotions clearly we are able to see the film’s narrative of how it is both dramatic and emotional.  A long shot is then used showing the characters running from the main area of the lobby to the elevator shaft which again makes the scene very dramatic as us viewers ask questions like ‘will they make it in time?’ or ‘are they going to make it alive?’ which makes us keep watching.

learner response for powerpoint presentation

WWW- I was able to explain clearly how the images were contrapuntal to the music and how they were parallel to the music. I made sure that I was not reading off of the presentation and I pointed clearly at each image and explained how each  of them linked to the music.
EBI- My presentation should have been a little longer and I should have had more than 4 images per slide. I should have gone into more detail when explaining how the images were contrapuntal and parallel to the music.

My top 3 picks for the presentations :

  1. Abayomi
  2. Katie
  3. Callum
They all presented really well and spoke clearly .They also had a lot of images for each slide and were able to explain why each of them linked to the music and didn't link to the music. I also enjoyed each of their music choices.

In the extract I have chosen there is a variety of different sounds.  To begin with this extract from the film starts off with non -diegetic sound. This is non -diegetic as the main character is doing a voice over which means it isn't coming directly from the scene itself. Then shortly after we are introduced to diegetic sound as there is dialogue between the characters when they are being arrested and the police begin to argue back with them. In this extract the parallel sounds we can hear is again coming from the dialogue of the main characters. As it is an aggressive scene between the police officers and the two young black males the explicit dialogue contrasts with this making it parallel. At 1:53 to 1:56 in the extract I can notice a short sound bridge. We can hear the main character coughing at 1:53 and he still continues to cough when the camera has switched scenes meaning the same sound has been carried into a different shot. The only time i can identify music being played in this extract is at 1:!3 to 1:20 seconds. The music being played is coming from within the film therefor it is diegetic sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsw4F14OU54

Film Noir is a short phrase in french which means 'black film' and was developed in the early 40's. Its key elements are low-key  lighting, dark gloomy settings that involve crime or corruption and downbeat music to create suspension.

Film language : Lighting

  1. Identify examples of high and low-key lighting.
  2. Say which depict topback or under lighting.
  3. What effects are created by the lighting in each image?

1)  In this picture I think high - key lighting is being used. This is because there is a big contrast between the light and darkness.
2)  I think only top lighting is being used as the light is shining directly on the females face only. This creates a contrast between the light and darkness as it forms shadows around her.
3) This creates the effect of making the female look more noticeable and pretty as her face is now the main focus in the image. It also gives us more detail in her face. However the dark shadows formed around her create a sense of isolation , as though she is locked away somewhere by herself.

1) In this picture both high and low key lighting are being portrayed.
2) I think the back light, key light and filler light are all being used to create a dramatic effect on the male figures face.
3) By using all 3 of these lightings it a dark shadow below the male figures face and below his eyes two. As these shadows are created in these specific areas it beings to portray the male as a dark/ evil person. In addition the extra filler and key lights make create a brightness around the area below his head which draws our attention to his clothing. His big fur coat and chain suggests he is a powerful man.

1) In this image low- key lighting is being portrayed.
2) Just top lighting is being used as it is coming directly from above. The use of the top lighting creates shadows below the male figure but makes us viewers look directly at his face as it is the main focus in the image.
3) This gives off the effect that this male figure is a powerful person. In addition the top lighting allows us to see the gun being held in the male's hand which suggests he is a powerful villain. The angle at which the top lighting is being shone also creates a half shadow on his face which is significant as it may be portraying him as a person with both a good and evil side.

1) In this picture high-key lighting is being portrayed.
2)  I think top, back and under-lighting are all being used in this image. The top and under lighting reflect off of each other which create a brightness around the females face and arm. However the other half of her body is covered by a shadow that was created by the lighting.
3) This allows us to see the female's facial expression in great detail. This gives off the effect to the audience that she is scared and possibly trying to escape from someone or something that is going to harm her. This suggests that this is a horror film.

1) In this image high key lighting is being used.
2) I think just filler lights are being used in this image as it is softening all the shadows created from the lighting coming through the window.
3) This means the shadows are not dramatic too dramatic as they wouldn't fit well with the scene. The dim lighting may effect the audience by making them calm and collect which is what the characters may have been feeling at the time.

1) In this picture low key lighting is being portrayed.
2)Just back lighting is being used in this image which creates shadows / silhouettes of the 4 people walking.
3) This gives off the effect that it is a horror film which creates suspense towards the viewers as they are curious of the events that will soon occur. As us viewers cannot exactly see any of the four people's faces it makes us curious of who they are and what they look like.

1) In this image low key lighting is being portrayed.
2) I think just key and back lights are being used in this image.
3) The filler light creates a shadow behind the female's head making the scene more dramatic , this type of lighting is used in horror films to create more suspense towards the audience.

1) High key lighting is being used in this image.
2) I think top lighting and extra filler lights are being used.
3) By using these type of lighting , no shadows are being created which makes the image less dramatic. Also the extra filler lights helps us see the female's face in great detail. Nothing is being hidden behind shadows and everything is in sharp detail.

1) Low key lighting is being used in this image.
2) We can see that back lighting is being used only.
3) As very little lighting is being used it creates a lot of darkness and shadows in the image. These tights of lighting are used in dramatic scenes in horror or action films. Also the back light behind the character in the image also gives off the effect on the reader that perhaps this man is dangerous. The fact that his face is barely shown and is hidden by the shadows makes the audience very suspicious of who he could possibly be.

1) High key lighting is being used in this image.
2) There is a slight balance in lighting in this image both light and dark. This creates a little shadow behind the female character however it is not a dramatic shadow so the image itself isn't too dramatic. The under lighting creates great detail in this image as it accentuates both the male and female's faces allowing us to see their facial expressions and body language.
3) This gives off the effect to the audience that these two people are in love as we can clearly see their close body language and facial expressions towards each other.

Film Language: Mise-en-scene

This is a still image captured from the Netflix series 'Orange is the new black' which shows the lives of both young and middle-aged females who are in jail. Usually people would make stereotypes of those living in jail as depressed or angry people. However this still image contradicts this stereotype as all of the characters look very happy or loving towards another. The bright lighting and colours allow us viewers to see great detail in each characters face. There is also not much of a setting behind the characters which allows us to focus on them only , the bland grey background allows us to concentrate on them only. The bland background also makes the main character (Piper's) orange jumpsuit stand out which is important because it may signify that she is the main character , the one you should pay attention to the most. Props are used in this still image such as the comb in one of the females hands. This may tell us that this is not any ordinary prison and that maybe there could be humorous scenes that involve a hair dressers etc. The body language in this still image again tells us readers/viewers that this may be no ordinary prison. The characters are hugging or standing very close to each other which may portray the love they have for each other . Although some of their facial expressions seem a bit blunt their body language contradicts this , telling us that although they may sometimes get upset with each other they'll always have that bond to bring them right back.

Madea goes to jail

Highschool musical
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbrbUfYSt0E

The three extracts I have chosen are quite different to each other. High school musical is a film that belongs to the genres comedy and drama. The target audience for this film is females 70% male 30% aged 12- 30. Whereas 'Madea goes to jail' and 'baby boy' have slightly different target audiences 50% female 50%males aged 16- 40. The similarities between  'Madea goes to jail' and 'baby boy' are that they both belong to the same genres which are comedy , crime and drama. Baby boy and Madea goes to jail are quite different to high school musical as they have quite a lot of fast paced scenes. As these scenes are face paced they have quick cuts and dramatic music. Whereas in high school musical there is upbeat music and less quick cuts in scenes. The target audience for high school musical also differs to 'baby boy' and 'made goes to jail's target audience as baby boy has explicit scenes which involve drugs, sex and violence. In high school musical again there is a lot of upbeat music scenes which suggests that is more of a family film for young kids.

Introduction to Film Language

Harrison Ford : BLADE RUNNER

I think the film is about a young man who is on a mission to get something. However it looks like his mission is being interrupted by a female who he may be in love with or she may possibly be his rival.I can tell this by how the lighting is shone over the female's face making her look vulnerable. However she has an angry facial expression which conflicts with the lighting , making her look evil. I think the genres belong to action and drama.  I think the target audience is middle aged females and males. They may be aged around 25-35.

SCARY MOVIE 2
I think this film is about a group of young people who are exploring a haunted house / area. However judging from the film poster there seems to be a lot of comedy involved. I can tell this by how the tagline says ' absolutely hilarious' creating a sense of humour. I think the target audience for this film is for both male and females ages 15 - 25. I believe those aged 15 + will enjoy this movie as there seems to be a lot of humour and comedy in it , however those aged above 25 tend to be more mature and may not find it as funny as those younger than them.

UZAK

I think think this film is about a young man who returns to his city / home town. He seems as though he is depressed as his back is facing up suggesting he is depressed or hiding something. He is also peering over the water and boats suggesting there may be some past memories created in the specific area that may be affecting him. The dull lighting again creates a sense of sadness and depression upon the character which contrasts with his dark hair and clothing. I think the genre this film belongs to drama as the main character looks as though he may be back to create trouble or revenge in this area. The target audience for this film is 70% males 30% females aged between 18- 35.

I'M NOT SCARED

I  think this film is about a little boy who finds a hole in the ground that may lead him to a mysterious object or place. The genres this film belongs to is mystery and drama. I think the target audience would be for both males and females. 50 % females 50% males aged 12 - 35.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

I think this film is about a group of pirates who go on an adventure to find some treasure. By looking at the small tag line 'dead man's chest' we can tell that this is what the pirates are aiming to get. The genres this film belongs to are action, adventure and fantasy. The target audience for this film is 60% males 40% females aged 12- 45.

SIN CITY

This film looks like it is about a group of young adults who set out to 'sin' in a city. By looking at the film poster i can see weapons such as guns which suggest the characters aims are to hurt other people. The genres this film belongs to are crime and thriller. The target audience for this film is 40% females 60% males aged between 16-35.

BRIDE & PREJUDICE

This film looks like it is about a young Asian couple who are planning to get married, however the word 'prejudice' in the film title suggests there may be some problems in the way. The genres this film belongs to is comedy and romance. I can tell this by the big tagline at the top 'spectacular, romantic, funny and SO sexy'. The target audience for this film is 60 % females 40% males aged 16 - 45.

MILLION DOLLAR BABY

This film looks like it is about a young female who has a dream / goal of becoming a boxer. The dark lighting around her suggests her journey or becoming a boxer may not be easy and the two males hidden in the shadows suggest that they may be there is disturb her dream. By concentrating the lighting on the female in the middle tells us that she is the main character in the film. The genres this film belongs to is drama and mystery. The target audience for this film 50% female 50% male aged 15- 35.
